I am a Psychologist and Counsellor, and for over 25 years, I have worked full-time in the NHS and privately providing counselling for hundreds of individuals and couples needing help with sex and relationship issues.
I graduated with an Honours degree in Psychology in 1989 and soon afterwards began working full time in the NHS as a Counsellor in busy Sexual Health Departments in London hospitals. Here I spent over 20 years helping individuals and couples work through all kinds of relationship issues including those relationships with parents, colleagues, and friends.
I have also worked for many years with issues around infidelity, one or both partners being unfaithful, communication problems, jealousy, open relationships and rediscovering/increasing passion.
I also specialise in men's emotional and sexual health and for more than 20 years worked with hundreds of men covering a wide range of sexual issues including sex/porn addiction, performance related anxiety, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, sexual dysfunction, issues around sexuality and sexual identity, low self esteem/sexual confidence .
During this time I studied for a Masters Degree and completed BACP Accredited Counselling qualifications.
I subsequently set up in private practice where I have been able to continue offering couples and individuals the highest quality counselling service.
During my career I have taught medical students and lectured on courses for GPs and have been recognised as an expert in my field. I have been featured in The Times News Paper and have articles published in medical journals. I have also appeared on BBC Radio.
My training in psychology and counselling combined with my vast experience of hospital work and private practice enables me to quickly find the most effective way to work with you in order to achieve the best results.
I work to high ethical standards in accordance with BACP and BPS Guidelines and carry Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance. I also undertake regular personal therapy to ensure the quality of my work.
Typically, when working clients, I use a Psycho-Dynamic approach. This means placing significance on a persons early experience of life (especially their early relationships with significant others, parents siblings and peers). I believe that these early experiences are often responsibly for shaping a personality in adulthood. I also work Integratively. This means I use the best counselling approach to suit the clients needs, which may mean that more than approach or a combination of approaches is required.
During your initial assessment I will try to understand your requirements of counselling and assess which approach would benefit you the most.
If I feel that I am not able to provide you with the help you need I will refer you to a more appropriate practitioner.
"The sessions we had were very beneficial and helpful and have given us a great start to work on our issues together. We can now work on improving our relationship, we are grateful for the help you provided." TM
"After my first session which was really positive I knew I had made the right choice choosing David to help me. Thank you" RJ
"Having seen various Counsellors in the past, and not feeling that any really helped me, David's approach was completely different and things just started to click. I would certainly recommend Specialist Counselling to others. HR
